課程概述

The purpose of this course is twofold: (1) to further improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities in English, with special emphasis on listening fluency and comprehension development, and (2) to help you develop academic skills that can help you transit successfully from high school to university classes. To achieve these goals, you need to work both in and out of class. You need to complete the assigned reading before class and participate actively in class discussions, group exercises and on-line learning. You also need to complete a theme-based learning project that demonstrates your ability to listen, talk, read, and write about a topic that interests you.

課程要求
Attendance and participation:
*It is important for you to attend class regularly and punctually. Proof must be provided for sick leaves or absences for university business. All requests for leave must be made through the school system (學生請假系統).Unexcused absences will be penalized.
*You need to participate actively in the class activities. Sometimes you may also be assigned to give a short presentation in class. The third hour of the class is usually devoted to online language learning. You will be introduced to a variety of online English resources and then explore the resources on your own.
*At the end of each class, you will answer “exit ticket” questions to help you reflect upon your learning.
*You will write a self-assessment review at the end of the semester to describe what you have done in this class and your progress.
*Your attendance and active participation in class activities will be worth 35% of your final grade. Anyone missing the equivalence of five weeks or more of class will automatically fail this course.
*A doctoral student (Judy Hsu) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will join the class from Week 10-17 to conduct her doctoral research. She has received the instructor’s consent to enter this class because her project activities are beneficial to your language learning, including (a) Collaborative Reasoning (CR): CR is a discussion method developed by Professor Richard Anderson at the Center for the Study of Reading of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. You will get to hear, discuss, and write about interesting topics. Through CR, you will have opportunities to exchange ideas and perspectives in small groups to boost your oral language proficiency, critical thinking, and writing skills. (b) In-class assessments and surveys: You will have opportunities to practice spontaneous speaking and writing in English and learn about aspects of your English learning experience and your attitude towards learning English.

Theme-based learning project:
*You should compile a learning project based on a topic of your choice. In the project, you must demonstrate your efforts to practice all four skills with materials about the topic.
*You should document your efforts on a blog regularly. Each blog entry must be 150 to 300 words long. Please provide the link to your blog entry in our FB group as soon as you have finished it. In your first posting, you should tell us why you have chosen your topic. You need to post one entry each week. You should also read and respond to at least 2 of your classmates’ blog entries (at least one within your group). In your last entry, you should summarize your project and tell us what you have learned from your project.
*Throughout the semester, you will be provided with opportunities to talk about your project with your classmates.
*At the end of the semester, you will give a 5- minute presentation on your project to the whole class. Your presentations will be peer-reviewed.
*After your project presentation, you will submit a written project report. In the report, you will describe the activities you have done regarding listening, speaking, reading and writing and self-evaluate the progress you have made. The report will be part of your self-assessment review.
*All assignments related to your project will be worth 30% of your final grade.
*Plagiarism will be heavily penalized.

Quizzes:
A weekly quiz will be administered at the beginning of the class. No make-up quizzes will be permitted. Eight best scores of these quizzes will be worth 20% of the final grade.

GEPT:
You will take a GEPT reading /listening test at the beginning of the semester to identify your strengths and weaknesses. You will take another GEPT reading/ listening test at the end of the semester to see how much you have improved during the course. The scores of these tests will be worth 15% of your final grade.
